Collection Overview and Introductory Remarks
This collection consists of printed yet unbound Central American documentation held by the Latin American Library of Tulane University. It incorporates much recently purchased material, pertinent documents extracted from the Paniagua Collection which was originally purchased from D.W. Amram in 1933, numerous pieces of printed matter donated by Connie Griffith in 1976, and all documents previously cataloged in the Latin American Library which for the most part were bought by William J. Griffith with a Carnegie Foundation Grant in 1952, into a coherent whole.
Chronologically, the 480 pieces span from 1785 to 1980. Few, however, fall within the Spanish colonial period prior to 1821 or within the twentieth century. During the nineteenth century, moreover, the alternating political periods of Conservative or Liberal hegemony between 1821 and 1871 have left the greatest quantity of material. Since a single document may contain several dates, each has been dated according to the latest date. Approximate dates have been given to undated items on the basis of internal evidence and quality of papers.
Geographically, the majority of the collection was published in Nueva Guatemala; however, several items were published in Antigua, Guatemala; San Salvador, El Salvador; Leon, Nicaragua; Comayagua and Tegucigalpa, Honduras; San Jose, Costa Rica and Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Most of the documents were written at the place of place of publication, but some were signed in one place and published in another. Therefore, the location of all items in this classification are cited as the place of signing.
Generically and topically the documents are diverse. Several prominent Central Americans appear as both writers and subjects, including Rafael Carrera (1814-1865), Jose Cecilio del Valle (1777-1834), Manuel Arce (1786-1846), Francisco Morazan (1792-1842), Mariano de Aycinena (1790-1855), Mariano Galvez (1794-1862), and Justo Rufino Barrios (1835-1885). Political broadsides, newspapers, magazines, speeches, personal denunciations, letters, and decrees are a few of the many types of documents found in the collection. Such diversity causes organizational difficulties. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to divide the collection topically under the headings of Government, Politics, Military, International Affairs, Separatism, Propaganda, Personalism, Religion and Culture, each arranged in chronological orders within their topics.
Since the collection guide for the Central American Printed Ephemera Collection was written in 1981, the collection had been augmented and rearranged. All documents are now filed in chronological order, not according to the categories as indicated in the guide. Each new document was cataloged individually. The cutoff date for the Central American Political Ephemera Collection is 1960. More recent printed ephemera is cataloged into the Contemporary Central American Printed Ephemera Collection, No. 74.
By January 2000, the size of Central American Printed Ephemera Collection had greatly increased. The items that had been individually cataloged since 1989 ran from 20 #1 through 20 #574. Some of the materials added to the CAPE included a number of messages delivered by various presidents of Guatemala to that nation's National Assembly, a series of speeches delivered to commemorate Guatemalan Independence and a number of other laws, decrees, pamphlets and other printed matter.
A decision was made to allow the Central American Printed Ephemera Collection to be microfilmed. Prior to this process, it was determined that the old card catalog maintained by the Latin American Library had to be updated and replaced with a better type of finding aid. The current collection guide is the result of this effort. It reflects all documents contained in the CAPE, as of the end of August, 2000. All documents continue to be filed in chronological order. All previous systems of numeration and classification have been eliminated in order to avoid confusion. The preparer of this guide would like to acknowledge the assistance of two students, Carlos Rodriguez and especially Rosamaria Lopez whose tireless efforts and attention to detail made this new collection guide a reality. The Central American Printed Ephemera collection will continue to grow. Future additions to this collection will appear in an addenda to this collection guide. (See bottom of this guide for April 2001 addendum.)
