Chiapas Collection 1723-1927
(Collection 33)

Collection Guide

420 pieces
Prepared by Ruth Olivera and Michael Fry, October 1981.

The Chiapas Collection consists of documents relating to Chiapas, Mexico, purchased or acquired over a period of years from several sources. Documents previously identified as the Paniagua Collection, the Chiapas Area Collection or the Aram Collection are now assembled here into one expanded collection.

The principal collector was Flavio Antonio de Paniagua, a Chiapas lawyer, whom Frans Blom, the director of the Middle American Research Institute, met on a field expedition in 1925. After Paniagua's death David W. Aram acquired his entire collection of political, religious, and historic materials, and in 1934 the M.A.R.I. purchased those items dealing with Chiapas. They form the main body of the collection. Various acquisitions had been made during field expeditions and purchases of other Chiapas documents were later made from Aram. The individual provenance of each document is identified according to the following legend:

Paniagua Collection (Paniagua)
Aram Purchase of 1934 (Aram)
Aram Purchase of 1939 (Aram 1939)
Aram Sale to Wauchope (Aram 1949)
Matilda Geddings Gray Expedition of 1925 (MGG)

Certain items from these purchases do not relate directly to Chiapas and have beenplaces inother collections, their provenance recorded in the source file and on accession sheets. News papers of Mexico, which were part of Aram purchases of 1939 and 1949, have been added to the nespapaer collection. The documents include legal papers, Reales Cédulas, Reales provisiones, decrees, inventories, reports, censuses, bills of sale, correpondence, public notices, or broadsides, accounts, declarations of independence, music, pastoralletters, and other church papers, appointments, speeches, newspapers, periodicals, land claims, tax receipts, military reports and orders, rules, maps, labor contracts, statistics and other similar items. Documents fall into three main categories of: Manuscripts 1723-1916, Printed ephemera 1779-1927, and Bound volumnes 1813-1911. They are arranged in chronological order within each category. A partial calendar, which follows, has been prepared for all items.
