Collection Guide
Prepared by Ruth Olivera, August 1993.
The Mahan collection consists of autograph documents signed by Spanish kings, South American colonial officials, and South American military leaders of both the loyalist and revolutionary camps. They originated in Spain, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, but are principally from Peru.
Although there is a great similarity in the types of documents - disptches, orders, requests, reports - the documents themselves are basically unrelated. Certain names appear again and again, but without direct continuity of subject matter. Each document stands alone. Viewed as a whole, however, the collection reflects in a broad sense the changing events of history and the conditions of the times, as South America emerged from colony to independent state. The remarkable 1540 document speaks of money owed by conquistador Francisco Pizarro. Other documents reveal the legality of the slave trade or speak of the removal of Indians from a certain place. The problem of smuggling is also a topic. One of the later papers is written or printed letterhead of the short-lived Estado Sud-Peruano.
In general, documents from Spain are concerned with the collection of taxes imposed by the king or churchmen, while those from South America are concerned with colonial government and in one way or another with military affairs. Most of the signers were military officers, some of whom were loyal to the crown, others of whom were leaders in the wars for independence. The make-up of personnel in particular units, salaries to be paid, the number of deserters and prisoners, requests for supplies and ammunition, problems of financing and recruiting - all are frequent subjects. There are photographs of lithographs of four Spanish generals. Also port activities, particular ships, cargoes, payment of passengers and of laborers are mentioned.
Although it is not known just how these documents were originally acquired, it seems likely that they came from two different sources, as most of the documents were found mounted in large brown sheets of construction paper, while the rest had been place in blue folders. The military rank of the signers and information as to their historical importance were noted in the margins of the brown sheets, and a lesser amount of information was noted on the blue folders. The documents have now been removed and placed in acid-free folders, but the data have been recorded, and appear in brackets in the individual descriptions of the documents. The original brown and blue papers have been retained and are numbered to correspond with the document numbers. All documents are arranged in chronological order, from 12 October 1533 to 11 July 1836.
